How Do You Fly A Drone

The complexity of technology can install fear in anyone. There’s no reason that should steer you from the things you really want. Most of the smaller drones on the market are designed to get beginners and little-dronechildren into the next step of remote control electronics. Learning the functions of the transmitter is essential to proper control and stability while piloting and RC helicopter drone. Don’t be confused by the several different terms used to relate to all the different styles and sizes out there either, they all still fly similar with different motors, battery capacity, and propellers.

Radio Control Frequencies

Can I operate multiple drones within the same air space? This is a very common question and a good one at that. There are two most common frequencies, 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz. 2.4 is the common RF used to connect to a ground transmitter. The other, 5.8, is used to avoid the entangling of frequencies in the same band and is commonly found in a higher end RC camera drone. Some use the 5.8Ghz to fly or operate while the 2.4Ghz will be used for video and pictures through your smartphone app. With the sudden spike in use over the past few years, First Person Viewing has also made an impact. Radio frequencies are also able to pick up a signal from anything else giving out a signal. Your computers wireless network runs off a 2.4Ghz, so when flying indoors you could experience a loss of control over the flying object in dense housing areas. With covering the basics yes you can operate several in the same air space. Calibrating controllers is essential to be sure there’s less of a chance of any interruption.

Control Sticks

Directional control is achieved in a helicopter by changing the direction the propellers lean. This is referred to “Changing The Attack” of the blades. The most popular drones available today have anywhere from three to eight propellers. A multi-rotor RC helicopter maintains stability by changing the speed of the propellers. Forward, backward, left and right on the right control stick will move in a linear direction in relation to the movement of the right control stick. Up and down is controlled on the left control stick when positioning the stick forward or backward. The left control stick also controls the left and right rotation of your drone.

Different Sensors

Every drone on the market today has to have some type of sensors to be able to read what it is doing and what you are commanding it to do. The gyroscope sensor and the accelerometer sensor. These two sensors monitor and aid in controlling your little gadget.

  • Accelerometer Sensor detects the linear movement in a straight line. There are three axes in a 3D area: X, Y, and Z. An accelerometer will detect and measure the movements along the three axes but not around them. This is referred to “Linear Movement”.
  • Gyroscope Sensor is designed to detect the rotational movement around a 3D area across the X, Y, and Z axes. Where the accelerometer measures motion along the three axes, the gyroscope measures motion around an axis. Gyroscopes, gyros for short, and accelerometers are a necessity for maintaining control and stability.

The Federal Aviation Administration Regulations

All air traffic, including drones, in the U.S. is regulated by the FAA. Large businesses such as Amazon and Google, and small businesses and hobby enthusiasts have been pushing for a more relaxed regulation to allow for more commercial uses of this technology with fewer restrictions for hobby flying. Before civil drones were on the FAA’s radar, there were some existing regulations in effect.drone-airplane

  • Drones are not to be used for commercial purposes or jobs that produce revenue
  • Drones can be flown only in the line of sight which means you are not to fly in the FPV mode or any other technological assistance
  • You are not to fly above 400 feet within 5 miles of an aircraft, above any government establishments, or in national park’s.

Due to the increasing demand for drones, the FAA has proposed lighter restrictions and is re-evaluating its regulations. However, the regulations proposed would still prohibit businesses like Google and Amazon to deliver packages.

What Does This All Mean?

Drones are here and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. The growing interest in technology especially flight has brought on a new era of remote control vehicles. The operation is made simple for anyone to operate and easily programmed to fly numerous multi rotor drones within the same area. WIFI makes even more possible for us. Even though it is very easy to buy a drone you should still stay updated on flight regulations in your area if you plan to take it outside and play. Even the small camera drones could get you in some trouble if used improperly. Essentially, have fun with your purchase. The sensors and controls work very well when calibrated properly and built in a durable enough case to withstand a few crash landings.
